Social Security Cards for Non-U.S. Residents

Most people think that you need to be a U.S. Citizen or Green Card holder to get a Social Security Card, but that is not true. There are special types of Social Security Cards issued to Non-U.S. residents. Most people assume that you need to be a United States citizen or resident (Green Card holder) in order to get a social security card, but that is not true. Non-U.S. residents can also get a Social Security card. Cards issued to non-U.S. residents display the person's name, the SS number, and the message "NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT". Persons allowed to work in the U.S. for a certain period of time receive cards with the message "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION". These Social Security cards should NOT be used for employment without DHS (Department of Homeland Security) authorization, but you may use the SS number to establish a credit history in the United States, and if you wish, you may also apply for credit cards, loans and even mortgages. You can enjoy the convenience of having an American credit card for example, even if you don't live in the United States.
